Team Burke-Browne
Foundation
The Team Burke-Browne Foundation was formed in honour of the late sporting legend Angela Burke-Browne who lost the battle to cancer in July 2014. Burke-Browne represented the Trinidad and Tobago in three different disciplines of sport. She was awarded the Chaconia Medal Gold after the Trinidad and Tobago Team won the World Netball Championships in 1979. In addition, she was inducted to the National Sport Hall of Fame in 2004 and was honoured as one of Trinidad & Tobago’s “50 Legends of Sport 1962-2012” in commemoration of the country’s 50th Anniversary of Independence. She initiated various projects which included feeding the less fortunate, coordinating the annual back to school drive, leading a women’s support group, volunteering to coach netball within her community among many other community enrichment, spiritual and nation building initiatives.
To continue her legacy her daughter Jaimie Browne along with her siblings continued her strive to develop young women through sport and physical activity. With that, the Netball vs Cancer Mission (NvC) was created to use netball as a conduit to provide support, increase awareness and raise funds towards cancer research both on and off the court. By promoting the importance of cancer prevention, early detection and making healthy lifestyle choices, NvC is committed to Teaming up Against Cancer, by bringing communities together through sport and activities to join the fight for a cure.
In 2016, the Central Regional Indoor Sporting Arena (CRISA) became the home of the Netball vs Cancer Tournament and Health Expo. The event raised $10,000.00, which was donated to the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society. The event continued in 2017 and 2018 and has been to Tobago, Barbados and Grenada with plans to take it throughout the Caribbean. The Team Burke Browne Foundation continues with other projects throughout various communities, The Netball Community Caravan and the Back to Basics Netball Programme whose mission is to use playing the sport of netball to contribute to the holistic development of the young girls within the communities and also, to contribute to the rebuilding of netball as a premier female sport, by imparting the fundamentals of the game.
